A Cut Above Innovation

Tool Use / Procedure / Tips

Set your finish nail with a grain shape imprint.

Position the tool tip over the nail:

Center the nail set over the finish nail to be driven below the wood surface (as you would normally do with a round nail set), and align the grain shape nail set wings in the direction of the grain.

Impact with a hammer.

The hammer impact depth must be sufficient to imprint the grain wings beneath the surface of the wood surface.  This will leave you with the finish nail now beneath the surface along with the grain shape imprint, ready to putty fill.

Fill grain shape imprint with putty:

Use a putty color matched to the wood breed in use and fill grain shape fully with a putty knife.  Wipe off the excess and let dry.

Sanding and finishing:

Sand the puttied areas with sand paper.  Sand the excess putty completely around the puttied hole. Use a sandpaper block or flat surface for a flat consistent puttied surface.  What you are left with is a puttied shape that hides where finish nails were used and blends within wood grain.
