Hands on Experience

Dave Harrington has been in the wood working trades since the late 1970s and has often utilized a technique for making the evidence of finish nails disappear.  Even a properly matched color putty covering a properly set finish nail would still show the unnatural round, puttied nail hole.  In higher end finish work Dave would clearly see that this detracted from the finished work and clients would agree.
Dave used a technique of angle carving wings off the full diameter of the set round finish nail hole with a carpenter's knife, then pop the wood from the center of the wing cuts that would leave a putty-able wing imprint in the direction of the natural grain.  When puttied and sanded only a grain shaped imprint that flowed with the grain would show.  Dave would be hard pressed to even find where the finish nail had been used once sanded and finished! He used this technique for many years on stain grade hardwoods when building staircases and installing / finishing hardwood floors. He has also used the wing shaping on crown molding, finish moldings, cabinetry overlays and always had a much higher end finished product.  This wing carving method developed a great answer to the technique of hiding finish nails that are invariably used.  However, this is time consuming, particularly where quite a few finish nails are present.  Dave has created a finish nail set / punch that imprints the grain wings while setting the finish nail with one quick impact of the hammer (just like one would typically do with a round finish nail set / punch).

The Grain Stamping Nail Set was invented to quickly create a putty-able hole that would blend naturally with the surrounding grains in as little time as it would take to set a nail with an inferior nail set.  Dave has personally used this in construction of staircases, bannisters, hardwood floors, kitchen cabinetry, crown moldings, trim moldings, built in bookcases and fireplace mantles.  The finished product, without the evidence of where finish nails were used made the finished woodwork far more clean looking and gained wonderful compliments from clients and fellow contractors alike!
